If you would like to read more about this subject, I have prepared a paper that highlights manufacturing processes, popular tobacco businesses in and around the Durham, NC area, and the general effects of tobacco on the city!

The paper itself stems from the research done by Nannie May Tilley, a twentieth-century author who compiled her findings about the Southeastern United States’ tobacco industry in her book, Bright-Leaf Tobacco. Her publication tells the story of many Durham businessmen and is a great resource for anyone who wants to further educate themselves on tobacco in North Carolina.

The title of Tilley’s book received its name from an eponymous variant of tobacco grown primarily in the NC Piedmont and Southern Virginia. From manufacturing processes to sales statistics and advertisements, the publication provides an extensive understanding to its audience of the rich history behind NC’s tobacco production up until the late 1940s, when the book itself was published.
